This Sacred Space
by
Rev. Carol E. Parrish

Sparrow Hawk Village is a unique creation located on a magnificent 400-acre, wooded mountaintop and is the home of Sancta Sophia Seminary near Tahlequah, Oklahoma. This highly respected intentional community provides a harmonious environment of 50 homes, office buildings, library, and church. It has lovely gardens, good drinking water, and a sophisticated infrastructure.

Community is a State of Consciousness.
We reaffirm the purpose of our village,
remembering we began with a touch from Spirit.

What is now Sparrow Hawk Village started in Sarasota, Florida as a small spiritual community named Villa Serena.

The Preparatory Program was established there and flourished. When prompted by spiritual guidance to move the program to Oklahoma, the Board of Trustees voted all the resources of Villa Serena be made available to Light of Christ Community Church to create a campus where the teachings could be offered, thus establishing its new home, Sparrow Hawk Village.

The purpose of the village offers a setting where spiritual work is validated. Sparrow Hawk exists as a place where esoteric teachings and a life of service, self-discipline, and stimulation-both devotional and intellectual-may be enjoyed. We affirm our middle-road path All who desire to be enriched by following our collective path are welcomed. We work through prayer, meditation, and conscious thought to create an environment rich in opportunities to serve and grow. We send out an invitation to coworkers, those who can appreciate what has been created, to come and be a part of our work.

Everyone who has joined us knows these ideas are precious. Look around. It is easy to see the work here has been blessed. Many benefits, both tangible and intangible, are evident at Sparrow Hawk Village. Many have bought lots and built homes, created the village, provided financial support, and held the dream; friends across the world have given of their resources. Together these gifts form the base for our vision. Reflecting on the past fourteen years, we see the successful outworking of our mission as a strong planetary influence, uplifting the hearts and minds of many.

What we have to offer is unique-a powerful, spiritual setting designed to holistically build high consciousness. A place of spiritual exploration, appreciation of expanding environmental awareness, respect for all world religions, and a chance to live the values we treasure with like-minded coworkers. Villagers are self-supporting people who live, learn, meditate, and worship together. The church sanctuary is centered on a vortex of energies created by a star-shaped convergence of Earth leys. This results in a unique enclosure of energies which enhances the synergy of living, learning, and personal growth for students, villagers, and visitors at this exceptional mountain retreat. The village itself is a sacred space which helps those needing to heal and make their lives whole.

I invite you to join me on a little jaunt in and around Sparrow Hawk Village. Imagine a secluded setting, a lush, green mountaintop, where a campus rests lazily at peace some weeks and hums with activity others. A horseshoe street curves between Light of Christ Community Church and Sancta Sophia Seminary buildings to wander among some thirty homes placed on carefully selected sites with good views and easy access to the woods.

Each house is fairly new since just a few short years ago nothing was here. Extra bedrooms welcome guests as an opportunity to introduce others to community consciousness. In the valley, gentle lanes fan out from a country road. Homes of all sizes are spaciously situated with little clusters gathered at points near the river. The river winds about the base of the mountain, past the village, and on through the hills of "Green Country," emptying into a recreational lake. A lovely campground with hookups serves nature-lovers, villagers, and visitors.

What do you suppose we look like?
I would respond, tongue in cheek, "On which day?" On Sundays, we dress up a bit to attend church services and a potluck that follows. Then we may take time to visit, enjoy each other's company, or participate in whatever lectures, workshops, social events, or other activities may be happening. On other days, we are quite casual, as is our lifestyle.

But who are we?
We are definitely middle-of-the-road. We are committed to one another, but we are not communal. We share our good times and our troubles with each other and help as we can. In fact, we shine in our response to everyone's need. We are growing together, yet we remain truly individual with our own thoughts, opinions, and ways of doing things. We are spiritual free thinkers, and we continue to learn how to work together without "working on" each other. We are idealistic, too much so at times, but we also have many very practical people who keep their feet on the ground, even as we lift our minds to a vision of what can be.

Moving to Community.
For many people, coming to community ranks about as high as going to heaven. Newcomers may bring unrealistic expectations to be met by the community. There is much adjustment to be made, in addition to dealing with all that is involved in any major move: getting acquainted, finding homes, doctors, favorite places to go, new friends.

However, a community does provide a safety net of new friends with whom to begin a rich life. People usually come here as though they were going to a spiritual retreat; then they find out that the activity of daily living exists as it does in the outside world. Each one is faced with many decisions and has to weed out what is most important. We have heard some people say, when visiting the village, "I've never met such fine people all in one place at one time!" What I like best about most of us as individuals is that we might be found in any city, town, or village across the country.

A few of us have gathered here to encourage and support each other as we focus on values that matter intensely to us. We understand the challenges of this era and work hard to create for ourselves and others, even those who do not know what is happening, a way of living that reflects high consciousness. By so doing, a new, more enlightened lifestyle can be anchored on the planet, and outer light will once again blossom in a sacred space. Consider community!
